Postgrad team second at SU LaunchLab hackathon
Congrats to our M&M postgrad team who finished in second place at the Fintech challenge!
Between the 15th and 17th of October, the LaunchLab hosted the 2021 SU LaunchLab hackathon. Teams could choose between a FinTech or Data Science based challenge. The Fintech challenge, which this group of M&M Postgrad students tackled, required teams to design a disruptive FinTech-inspired software solution that can help small businesses and their consumers transact and thrive in the new remote economy.
Says David Biggs, “Our team consisted of Nicholas Bunn, Daniel van Niekerk and myself. Our solution, FacePay, is a payment service that only requires a user’s face to authenticate them and make the payment. The service uses the same business model as SnapScan and Zapper, where businesses allow their customers to pay using this service (FacePay). Our solution was built on the Django full-stack framework and used Python’s face_recognition library. The solution managed to demonstrate how easy businesses and customers can create new accounts and how accurately customers’ faces are authenticated when payments are made. We believe our solution proved how feasible humans’ facial features are for authentication in the FinTech industry.”
We are so proud of them!
