A visit by KSB Pumps and Valves (SA) Pty Ltd
We were fortunate to have a mutually benefitting visit from an industry partner. Experts in their field Mr Friedrich Görgens, Mr Johan van der Poel, and Mr Ecan Mmakola of KSB Pumps and Valves (S.A.) Pty Ltd, part of a multinational manufacturer of pumps and valves with headquarters in Germany, gave us the opportunity to show them what we do in our Pump Laboratory. The international KSB Group has sales and marketing organisations, manufacturing facilities, and service operations on all continents.
Our Chairman, Professor Johan van der Spuy gave the visitors an overview of the Mechanical & Mechatronic department. Postgraduate students, Petrus Haasbroek, Jaco Luus and Nazeem Davids, supervised by Prof Annie Bekker, gave a presentation on pump performance and-pump cavitation while monitoring the vibration of the pump. The eventual aim of their research is to investigate the detection and control of pump cavitation using digital twins. Digital twin technology enables the user to represent the behaviour of an asset in (almost) real time within its operational context. As part of the research, KSB donated a new ETANORM centrifugal pump to the laboratory.
We are grateful that our students had this invaluable opportunity to interact with industry experts. By visiting our campus, KSB has enhanced their research, learning and experiences by sharing their knowledge of working in the industry.
