Welcome to Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering

Welcome to our Department. We invite you to share in the exciting opportunities that we have to offer. Please contact us if you have any queries.

The Faculty of Engineering was established in 1944 with three engineering departments of which Mechanical Engineering was one.

In 2006 the name of the Department changed to that of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, because the department is the home of the Mechatronics programme since 2001. Have a look at some of our past awards.

    Mechanical vs Mechatronic Engineering

Are you interested in science and technology? Are you innovative and self-motivated? Do you have an above average mathematics aptitude and are you a strong rational thinker? These qualities are ideal if you want to choose Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering as a career.

    Mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineering is characterised by the field’s involvement in structures, motion and transfer of energy. Mechanical engineers are responsible for the design, development, production and marketing of, for example, machines and machine elements, vehicles, aeroplanes, vessels, missiles, cooling systems, cooling towers and engines.

    Mechatronic engineering

Mechatronic engineering is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field that integrates mechanical engineering, electronics, and intelligent control systems to create advanced, automated cyber-physical systems. In an era where automation, robotics, and smart technologies are driving innovation across industries, mechatronic engineers play a crucial role in designing and optimising complex systems that improve efficiency, reliability, and functionality.
